Most business owners carry a number in their head for the leadership they need, and it’s a scary one. A real second-in-command, a director of operations who can actually run things, is supposed to cost a quarter of a million dollars a year. Add a fat fee just to find them. Owners either bleed cash to hire at that level or, more often, go without and keep drowning in their own business. That price ceiling is largely an illusion. One of the most successful agents in the country proved it when she made what she now calls the best hire of her 20-year career.
The price ceiling was the assumption. When she came to me, everyone she trusted had quoted the same figure: about $250,000 in salary for a true director of operations, plus close to $50,000 in headhunter fees. That’s the accepted wisdom, and most owners never think to question it. The mistake isn’t wanting great leadership; it’s assuming there’s only one place to find it and only one price to pay. Plenty of owners watch a hire go sideways and decide the whole idea doesn’t work. Usually, the real issue was how the role was defined and filled in the first place.
“Virtual assistant” is a badly misleading label. This is where I have to clear up the biggest misconception in my work. When I suggested we fill her role for a fraction of that cost, I was not talking about a five-dollar-an-hour task assistant. I was talking about a highly skilled professional who happens to live in the Philippines, someone with genuine leadership ability, compensated fairly and well for that skill. People hear the words virtual assistant and picture someone doing small errands, when the skills a capable operations hire actually brings can run the operations of a multi-million-dollar company. The label does the professional a disservice, and the owner one too. Paying a fair, strong wage for that talent is central to how this kind of hire should work.
The new hire found problems nobody had caught. The person we placed came into a business that already had several assistants and essentially cleaned house. Not by firing anyone, but by walking in and finding problem after problem that had quietly been costing her. She brought order and leadership to the entire operation. My client, with two decades of experience behind her, told me it was the single best hire she had ever made. Out of everyone she’d brought on in 20 years, this was the one that stood out, and the savings against that quarter-million-dollar path were enormous. That’s the difference between adding another task-doer and building real leadership into your team.
She kept hiring and started referring peers. The proof that it was real is what she did next. She didn’t just keep that one hire; she changed how she builds a team entirely. She hired more people through me and began referring other top agents at her level, the ones who said they wanted exactly what she had. The conversation across the industry has shifted with it. We’re no longer talking about virtual assistants as cheap task-doers, but about placing genuine leadership, chief operating officers, chief revenue officers, chief marketing officers, into American businesses. That’s a very different way to think about hiring for your business.
The talent you need may be overseas. If you’ve been told the leadership you need will cost you a fortune, question that the same way she did. The right person, with real skill and real leadership, is often far more accessible than anyone has told you, and it has nothing to do with settling for less. It has everything to do with looking where other people aren’t. Because the truth is simple: we’re all human beings, and talent is talent no matter where on the globe a person happens to live.
If you’re ready to stop drowning in your business and finally put real leadership in place, whether you’re here in Arizona or anywhere in the country, that’s exactly what I do.
